I'm Proud To Be A Texan!
I approached free agency with a very open mind. I wanted to go to a team that had a chance to win, that would use me well in the offense and that would show me respect in terms of compensation. The Houston Texans hit the mark in every category, and then some. I had a great visit in Denver, but when I reached Houston and spent some time there, it clicked. It boiled down to my feeling that the players and coaches and front office were all going in the same direction. They all have one goal and they have made progress toward that goal.
I felt I would be a perfect fit here, not only among the players in the locker room and on the field, but with my family off the field. I wanted to know that my family was going to feel good about this, so it all worked for me.
Having Coach (Mike) Sherman there helped my decision, as well as having some of the former players in Green Bay in Houston. It was a good feeling. It's kind of hard to put into words, but they made me feel wanted. When you spend time around people and they say they want you, that is one thing. I felt Houston said they wanted me and then backed it up with some of the gestures they showed me.
I like the system we're going to run and I think I'm going to be a big part of this offense. Houston is a building team. I've been there and I know what it takes to win, so hopefully I can add to the mix.
It was still a tough decision. I was hoping Green Bay would come up with something to keep me in the Green and Gold, but things worked out in Houston instead. No matter what happens, though, I'm still a Packer at heart. I was there for the majority of my career. Regardless of how long I play with the Texans, part of my heart will always be in Green Bay. That is where my home is right now. The fans and the community have always been great to me. I loved it there. I will miss Green Bay and the fans and the organization.
But this is a new start for me. I'm looking forward to the challenge. I'm going to play my heart out here. Houston is a team on the rise, and I am looking forward to being part of it.
I'm also happy to have finalized the free agency part of the off-season quickly. Flying from one team to another can be kind of exhausting. You travel, you have to smile and talk and shake hands and be "on." It is an exhilarating experience, but I am glad that it is over and that I am a member of the Houston Texans!
