It has been a very busy offseason for me in many ways. I have been training to stay in football shape because I want to come back with the Packers again next year. I have started pursuing my passion for teaching at De Pere High School. I will continue to teach there until the end of the school year in early June. I also have the option of helping out as a baseball or track coach. I am loving my time there and want to go back to school to earn my teaching degree. My life after football will be in education, so hopefully I can rise up the ladder and become a principal or administrator down the road. I really enjoy teaching and helping kids, so I can definitely see myself in education later in life. I may also consider becoming a high school football coach, but I would not want to coach above that level because the time commitment becomes overwhelming with recruiting and the never-ending cycle of work. I am really enjoying my time at De Pere High School this spring.
I am working hard to stay in football shape so I can make an impact if the Packers re-sign me. I will probably not know if I will be coming back until May, after the NFL Draft is over and the Packers have a chance to evaluate things. I am excited to have the chance to come back, so I am definitely doing everything I can to make it happen. Patience is the key virtue in this case, so I am not anxious for anything to happen immediately. I will be happy no matter what road I follow, whether it is football or teaching.
The NFL is going through some serious negotiations and debates right now, as the state of the league is in question. Players and owners are trying to get the fair share for everyone, but progress is coming very slowly. Players are not trying to be greedy. The players are simply arguing for their fair share of the revenues. Players have a desire to help their family live comfortably and want to be able to share their income with the people around them. Eventually, a decision should be reached before a lockout occurs. A lockout would seriously damage the reputation of the league. The fans would be upset and lose interest for the time that the league is off. The players would face a setback, especially the young guys who are just developing their skills. I hope everything gets settled before the threat of a lockout, but it will be a fight until the end.
The NFL draft is coming up in April. I do take some interest in the draft because it is an opportunity to see how your team will improve, and also gives you a chance to evaluate your own status in the league. You can get a feel for your teamís desires and long-term strategies. I hope to be back with the Packers next year, but I will be fine with whatever my next step will be.
