Agua Dulce sophomore linebacker Joe Baltazar will be playing in the Down Under Bowl in Brisbane, Australia this summer. The event, put on by Down Under Sports, is a four-team tournament that includes players from around the country.

Notable past participants in the event include former NFL players Jake Plummer and Ahman Green.

“I’ve been invited to play in Australia to represent the state of Texas and the conference I’m in,” Baltazar said. “But I feel it’s more for me to represent my school. It’s going to be a great honor for me to play.”

An all-state selection this season, Baltazar will join players from Australia and New Zealand at the competition.

“They sent me a letter, and I opened the envelope and it said I got invited to play,” he said. “I’m very excited.”

The trip July 6 will certainly be the farthest Baltazar has traveled from home, but he is proud to represent Agua Dulce on the other side of the globe.

“It’s a great honor. I’m representing my school, my state, and the community,” he said. “It just shows that a person from a small town can do anything.”

In order to pay for the trip, Baltazar is looking for sponsors. Down Under Sports is giving away a free trip for two to Australia and Hawaii, as well as a cruise to the Caribbean. Any person or business who makes a donation will receive a ticket that they can fill out, mail to the DUS, and enter into both drawings.

To make a donation or for more information, contact Armandina Garcia, Baltazar’s mother, at (361) 207-8580.
